Life

Lere Anan Timor (2012)

Lere Anan Timor comes from a noble Timorese Makalero family . He is the eldest of six children (two daughters and four sons) of Domingos dos Santos and Filipa dos Santos.

After primary school (1960–1965) and three years at the military school in Lospalos , Lere Anan Timor graduated from the Technical Agricultural School of the Salesians in Fatumaca (1969–1973). From August 1974 he did his military service in the Portuguese army, first in Aileu , then as a driver at the headquarters in Taibesi ( Dili ). In 1975 he was transferred to Caicoli to the 1st division of parachutists. He received his license in July and then did an internship in Fatumaca. In August 1975 he returned to his home in Iliomar.

When FALINTIL was founded on August 20, 1975, Lere Anan Timor became political assistant to FRETILIN's military arm . When Indonesia invaded East Timor on December 7, 1975 , Lere Anan Timor was Vice-Secretary of FRETILIN in his home region of Iliomar. Here he organized the resistance and protection of the civilian population. In 1976 Lere Anan Timor became secretary of the Marebia Zone, which included Iliomar. With the restructuring of FRETILIN in 1977 he became secretary of the Tractor Zone , which consisted of Iliomar and Lospalos , and secretary of RENAL (Reconstrução Nacional). Shortly thereafter, he was appointed delegate of the commissioner's office. In 1978 he escaped the destruction of the resistance base at Matebian and then operated from the jungle mainly in Iliomar. He quickly rose to war against the invaders in the FALINTIL. In 1979 Lere Anan Timor was appointed military commander and member of the central committee of FRETILIN. This promoted Lere in 1981 to operational commander and regional secretary for the eastern sector of Ponta Leste (today the Lautém municipality ). In 1981 he was elected to the FRETILIN Central Committee and political commissioner and political leader of the region. In July 1983 Lere Anan Timur was transferred to the Haksolok region ( Ainaro and Cova Lima ), where he held the position of the commanding regional officer. In March 1984, Lere Anan Timor was wounded in action and evacuated to Rotuto . During the restructuring in 1985 he became the commander of Region 4 (Lautém municipality), 1987 commander of the Centro Leste sector ( Baucau and Viqueque ), 1993 commander of the Ponta Leste sector and 1997 deputy chief of staff . Lere Anan Timor came to the Atelari camp in July 1999 for demobilization . Three of his siblings were killed by the Indonesian military. Even Elsa Pinto , his first wife died in 1981 in the jungle, shortly after the birth of her second son. His mother lived as an exile on the island of Atauro from 1982 to 1983 .

After the war, the FALINTIL was converted into the Army of Independent East Timor, the East Timorese Defense Forces. From February 1, 2001, Lere was Deputy Colonel of Commander-in-Chief Taur Matan Ruak and Chief of Staff . On November 28, 2009, Lere was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General and Deputy Chief of Staff of the F-FDTL. After the resignation of his superior, Lere Anan Timor, now with the rank of major general, was given command of the F-FDTL on October 6, 2011.

On February 9, 2015, President Taur Matan Ruak Lere Anan dismissed Timor and promoted him to honorary lieutenant general . Filomeno Paixão was to become the new commander-in-chief , but there was a dispute with the government and parliament, who had proposed an extension of the term of office for Lere Anan Timor. Finally, on April 15, an agreement was reached on the nomination of Pedro Klamar Fuik as the new Chief of Staff. Lere Anan Timor was to continue in command until the handover. After that, he and Paixão should either retire or go into reserve. However, during the tenure of President Taur Matan Ruaks there was no handover. In October 2015, the government recommended that Lere Anan Timor be extended. This gave Lere Anan Timor a third term of office, which was not actually provided for under current law. After the 7th government took office , President Francisco Guterres followed Prime Minister Alkatiri's proposal and extended the term of office of Lere Anan Timor and the existing FDTL leadership for another year on October 5, 2017, which meant another change to the military law.
