Independent language or dialect?
Makalero is very closely related to the larger Makasae language. The big similarities in the vocabulary are striking . However , there are some grammatical differences, with Makalero being a bit more conservative than Makasae. To a certain extent, communication between Makalero and Makasae is possible. At Ethnologue , Makalero was seen as the dialect of Makasae until 2015, and many Makalero speakers also refer to their language as the dialect of Makasae.
