Naueti ( Nauhete, Nauete, Naóti, Nauote, Nauoti ) is a dialect or language of the ethnic group of the same name in the southeast of East Timor , depending on the definition . Together with Kairui , Waimaha and Midiki it is grouped into the language / language group Kawaimina , which has the status of a national language in East Timor .
overview
The Kawaimina languages belong to the Timor branch of the Central Malayo-Polynesian languages . Because of their proximity to the Papuan languages , especially Makasae, there are some borrowings, especially from the Naueti. The languages stand out for their archaic features as well as unusual linguistic innovations, such as vowel harmony , aspiration and post-glottalization of consonants in their sound system. The structure of the grammar is generally very simple, with the exception of the Naueti.
The geographical centers of Naueti are to be found around the places Uato-Lari and Uatucarbau , in the municipality of Viqueque and in the southwest of the administrative office of Baguia (municipality of Baucau ). A Naueti minority lives in the administrative office of Viqueque (municipality of Viqueque). More Naueti native speakers have moved to the state capital Dili . In 2015, 16,507 East Timorese residents gave Naueti as their mother tongue in the census. 13,898 of them lived in the municipality of Viqueque, 1,489 in Baucau and 1,019 in Dili. The remaining 101 were distributed among the other municipalities in the country.
Naueti is geographically isolated from the other Kawaimina languages. In the neighboring regions the Papuan languages Makasae and Makalero dominate , which also influenced the vocabulary of Naueti. Differences can be seen in the Naueti between that in Uato-Lari and Uatucarbau -Baguia.
Translated, “Nau eti” means “now” or “at this point in time” in German. The word was taken up arbitrarily by the Makasae to denote their neighbors and is also used for their language.
