Uatucarbau ( Watu-Carbau , Watucarbau , Hato Carbau , Uato Carbau , Uata Carbau , Uato Carabau , Uatocarabau , Uatucarbau , Uato-Carabau ) is an East Timorese administrative office ( Portuguese Posto Administrativo ) in the municipality of Viqueque .

geography

The Uatucarbau administrative office (boundaries until 2015)

Until 2014, the administrative offices were still referred to as sub-districts . Before the 2015 regional reform, Uatucarbau had an area of 131.66 km². Now there are 130.69 km².

The administrative center is Uatucarbau in Suco Irabin de Baixo . During the Portuguese dictatorship , Nova Benfica was the administrative seat in Suco Afaloicai . Today the place is called Afaloicai, but is sometimes also called Uatucarbau.

The administrative office of Uatucarbau is located in the far east of the municipality of Viqueque on the Timor Sea . In the west it borders on the administrative office of Uato-Lari , in the north on the municipality of Baucau and across the river Irebere ( Irabere ) in the east lies the municipality of Lautém .

Uatucarbau is divided into six sucos : Afaloicai ( Afaloikai ), Bahatata , Irabin de Baixo ( Iarabin de Baixu , Ira Bin Craic ), Irabin de Cima ( Ira Bin Leten ), Loi Ulo ( Loi-Ulu , Loiulo ) and Uani Uma . The administrative center of the administrative office is located on the coast in the settlement center around Irabin Leteria (Suco Irabin de Baixo). This is also called Uatucarbau.

The Uatucarbau administrative office has 7401 inhabitants (2015), of which 3609 are men and 3792 women. The population density is 56.6 inhabitants / km². The largest language group is made up of the speakers of Naueti , which belongs to the Kawaimina languages and thus has the status of a national language . history

Between 1936 and 1941 the Dutchman Hofman mined manganese ore in Uatucarbau.

When the Japanese occupied the region in 1943, the colonial administration was still young and Christianization was not yet far advanced. Uatucarbau suffered from the consequences of the fighting between the Japanese army and Australian guerrilla units in the mountain and hill country. The Japanese demanded support from local leaders and forced entire villages to build roads, for example. Others supported the Allied soldiers, so that animosities arose between the clans that can still be felt decades later. After the end of the war, the Portuguese severely punished “collaboration” with the Japanese, which led to resentment against the colonial administration among some local nobles.

In the 1950s Uatucarbau belonged to the Lautém district . Only later did the administrative office become part of Viqueque.

In Afaloicai and Irabin Letarea (Irabin de Baixo) there were Indonesian camps for East Timorese who were to be relocated by the occupiers for better control.

In March 2010, several houses in what was then the sub-district were set on fire. The perpetrators are said to have dressed up as ninjas . Similar incidents had only occurred in Bobonaro and Cova Lima in the previous weeks , whereupon the army and police launched a major action. Matias da Silva de Jesus (Chefe de Suco from Loi Ulo) and Lino Martins (Chefe de Suco from Irabin de Cima) called for a security post in their sucos to better protect the residents in the north of the sub-district. The only police station in the sub-district is in the administrative center of Uatucarbau on the coast. The Secretary of State for Security Francisco Guterres said, however, that the ninjas in Uatucarbau were just rumors. Nevertheless, a police post should now be created in Afaloicai.
