The Irebere ( Irabere , German  Great Water ) is a river in the southeast of East Timor .

course

The Letana rises in Suco Baricafa ( Luro administrative office , Lautém municipality ). As soon as it leaves Baricafa, it is called Tunir and forms the border between the Sucos Caenlio (administrative office Iliomar , Lautém) and Uacala (administrative office Baguia , municipality of Baucau ). The river flows southwards until the Afalita, coming from Caenlio, flows into it. Both rivers now flow together as Irebere to the west. Also coming from Caenlio, the Sailuturo flows into the Irebere, which swings to the southwest shortly afterwards. From Uacala south flows the Radala . The Dana flows into it before the Radala and the Muadaco form the Boro , which finally meets the Irebere. From here lies the Suco Larisula (Baguia, Baucau) on the west bank . From it the Hifu flows into the Irebere, which is part of the border between Larisula and Uacala. Further to the southwest, the largest tributary meets the Irebere, the Oulauai .

The northernmost source river of the Oulauai is the Iraosso , which rises in the Suco Lavateri (Baguia, Baucau). Flowing south, it meets in Suco Samalari (Baguia, Baucau) the Dalassa that originated there and shortly afterwards on the Danahoe , which has its origin in Suco Defawasi (Baguia, Baucau). The river now flows further as Danahine through the Suco Alawa Leten (Baguia, Baucau) in a south-easterly direction, before it comes in an arc into the Suco Alawa Craik (Baguia, Baucau). Coming from the northeast, the Mauai , the river that is now called Oulauai, reaches here. The Mauai has its source in Uacala and forms the border between Defawasi and Larisula. The young Oulauai briefly forms the border between Larisula and Alawa Craik, before turning east when the Bassaruai meets him and now separates Larisula from Afaloicai ( Uatucarbau administrative office , Viqueque municipality ).

The Bassaruai rises in Hae Coni (Baguia, Baucau) and is the border river to Afaloicai (Uatucarbau, Viqueque). From here comes the Buroho and on the border with Loi Ulo , the Loissouro . The Buroho still flows into the Bassaruai, the Loissouro already into the Oulauai. From here lies south of the river Loi Ulo, north Larisula. After the confluence of the Togauai from Larisula, the Oulauai swings to the southeast, reaches the Suco Bahatata (Uatucarbau, Viqueque) on its southern bank and curves to the south.

Where the Oulauai flows into the Irebere, the municipality of Baucau ends and the Irebere flows south. Bahatata is on the west bank and Caenlio on the east bank. Later on the west bank first Irabin de Cima , then Irabin de Baixo (both administrative offices of Uatucarbau, municipality of Viqueque), on the east bank of the Suco Tirilolo (Iliomar, Lautém). Finally the Irebere flows into the Timor Sea .

There is an important bird area at the mouth of the Irebere . It covers 16,554 hectares with tropical dry forest and fields of the Sucos Tirilolo, up to about 20 kilometers inland. The Amboina hinge turtle ( Cuora amboinensis ), the rare McCord's snake necked turtle ( Chelodina mccordi timorensis ) and saltwater crocodiles live in and around the river .

The river bed consists of round stones covered with algae and muddy sediment. Larger aquatic plants are missing. Nine fish species were found in the Irebere in 2006:
