The Timor Pigeon ( Turacoena modesta ), also known as the Black Timor Pigeon , is a pigeon from the genus of the white-faced pigeon that lives in tropical monsoon forests . The species is classified as near threatened by the IUCN .

Appearance

The Timor pigeon reaches a body length of 40 centimeters and is therefore slightly smaller than the manada pigeon, another species belonging to the white-faced pigeon . There is no gender dimorphism. The Timor Pigeon differs from the closely related cuckoo pigeons in its more compact physique, the slightly shorter tail, which is slightly less graduated and tapering off more rounded at the end.

The plumage is dark slate blue throughout. It is almost black on the wings and top of the tail. The underside is a little lighter. On the top of the head, the neck, the chest and the upper coat, the plumage shimmers slightly green. The face and throat are white. The iris is yellow inside and red outside. The eye ring is yellow. The feet are dark gray.

Spread and behavior

The Timor pigeon is an endemic species of the islands of Timor and Wetar . These islands are home to several endemic species of pigeon, two of which have similar German names as the Timor pigeon. The small Black cuckoo-dove , however, belongs to the Indo-Australian young pigeons and Timor Green Pigeon is one of the green pigeon .

The distribution area of the Timor pigeon covers 31,300 square kilometers in this region. The habitat are forests at altitudes between 160 and 1,100 meters. Due to the decline in their habitat, their existence is considered endangered. While it seems more widespread in East Timor , its population is declining in West Timor . The Timor pigeon was spotted on the Indonesian island of Wetar in 1990. Unlike the closely related cuckoo pigeons, the Timor pigeon is rarely found in small flocks, but usually lives individually or in pairs. They stay in the middle layer of the tree canopy. It is a very inconspicuous pigeon that is mostly in the forest. If it is frightened, it does not fly very far, but looks for the closest hide nearby.
