The green pigeons ( Treron ) are a genus of pigeon birds that belong to the so-called fruit pigeons . The distribution area of this pigeon genus is very large and extends from Africa to Southeast Asia.

Appearance

Green pigeons are squat pigeons with a short tail. Their size varies greatly and ranges from 22 centimeters for the small green pigeon to 35 centimeters for the large green pigeon . The sexual dimorphism is differently pronounced in the individual species. In some species, the sexes can be distinguished very well. The males of the cinnamon-headed green pigeon have a golden-green breast, while the females have a yellow-green breast. In the spring pigeon, on the other hand, the plumage of the male has gray, orange and pink tones that are absent in the female.

The plumage of the green pigeon is predominantly green, but often has a yellowish or olive hue. Many of the species have yellow, purple or black markings, especially on the wings. In all species the barrel is feathered at the base. In some species the fletching goes even further. Green pigeons are fast and agile fliers. Flying green pigeons produce a so-called instrumental sound, a whistling flight noise.

behavior

Green pigeons are unlike most wild pigeons who live in trees and only come down to the ground to drink. Wild figs play a major role in their diet. The seeds of the wild figs are ground in the gizzard and digested with it. This distinguishes the green pigeons from the actual fruit pigeons, which excrete the seeds undigested.

The clutch consists of two eggs throughout. The nests are built in trees and bushes.
