The little green pigeon ( Treron olax ) is a species of pigeon birds . It occurs in Southeast Asia. Subspecies are not known. The London Zoo was the first European zoo to show this species in 1970. Relatively little is known about their way of life.

Appearance

The little green pigeon reaches a body length of 22 centimeters. This makes it smaller than a laughing dove. As is characteristic of green pigeons, however, it is built somewhat more compactly than these and has a shorter tail. The sexual dimorphism is very pronounced, so that males and females can be distinguished from one another even when observing the field.

The males of the little green pigeon have a pale gray head. The skull and neck as well as the nape are dark gray. The front breast is dark orange and turns yellow-green on the belly. The beak is bright. The iris is cream colored inside and light brown outside. The eye ring is light blue. Females differ from males by a dark olive-green upper side and a yellow-green underside of the body.

Distribution area and behavior

The little green pigeon occurs on the Malay Peninsula ( Thailand , Malaysia ) to Sumatra , including the Riau Islands and the islands of Bangka and Belitung . The distribution area extends to Kalimantan on Borneo and the island of Java . It is a common pigeon there, which has also developed human settlement space as a habitat and occurs in larger parks and gardens. It occurs mainly in the lowlands and, like all green pigeons, is a tree-dwelling species.
