The gray-masked green pigeon ( Treron griseicauda ), also known as the gray-masked pigeon , is a species of pigeon bird that is closely related to the thick-billed green pigeon . It is distributed in several subspecies in Southeast Asia.

The stock situation of the thick-billed green pigeon was classified in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016 as " Least Concern (LC) " = "not endangered".

Appearance

The gray-masked green pigeon reaches a body length of 28 centimeters. It is a medium-sized, compactly built pigeon that is slightly larger than a laughing pigeon . The tail accounts for between 7.7 and 8.6 centimeters. The beak is between 1.6 and 1.8 inches long. The gender dimorphism is only slightly pronounced.

Appearance of the males

In the male, the forehead, the reins and the crown are ash gray and merge into a dark olive green on the ear covers and the back of the neck. The mantle and the small wing-coverts are dark red-brown, on the wing bend the color is dark black-gray. The upper middle wing-covers are dark olive-green with broad yellow edges. The lower middle wing-coverts are darker with narrow sulfur-yellow edges on the outer flags. The arm wings are black with narrow yellow lines on the outer flags. The wings of the hand are black and have a narrow white border in freshly moulted pigeons. The back is olive green up to the upper tail-coverts and the middle tail feathers, the outer tail feathers are ash gray with a diffuse black transverse band in the middle.

The chin is yellowish-gray to ash-gray and merges into an apple-green throat and chest. In many individuals, the breast is tinged with orange. The belly is also apple green, the flanks are ash gray, the thighs and rump are dark green, the individual feathers are either lined with creamy white or have creamy white tips.

The eye ring is green or yellowish green. The beak, wax skin and beak base are green to black-green. The beak has a yellowish to greenish tip. The feet are red.

Appearance of the females

The females largely resemble the males in their plumage. With them, however, the mantle and the small wing coverts are not red-brown, but dark olive-colored. The yellow to sulfur-yellow fringes of the feathers of the elytra are narrower and paler. The sides of the chest lack the orange wash that the males have. The beak and wax skin are paler green and contrast less with the beak color. The tip of the beak is always greenish.

Distribution area

The gray-masked green pigeon occurs on Java , Bali , the Kangean Islands and Sulawesi as well as the smaller islands off the coast. It is a common bird in its entire range and occurs primarily in the lowlands. It inhabits sparsely forested areas and also occurs on agricultural areas and gardens, if these have the appropriate tree population. In the east of Java it can be found up to an altitude of 2500 meters. On Sulawesi, on the other hand, their height distribution does not exceed 700 meters.

Way of life

The gray-masked green pigeon is usually seen in pairs or in troops. Occasionally, very large groups, which can comprise several hundred individuals, gather in fruit-bearing trees. It eats a wide variety of fruits. Figs play a special role.

Basically, the gray-masked green pigeon is a tree-dwelling species of pigeon that is mostly in the upper treetop area. In Java it breeds between January and August. In the southeast of Sulawesi, however, breeding gray-masked green pigeons were observed as early as November. The nest is a loose platform of twigs that is erected high in the treetops. The clutch comprises two white eggs.
