The Kangean Islands ( Indonesian Kepulauan Kangean ) are an Indonesian group of islands in the Bali Sea .

geography

Overview

The Kangean Islands are northeast of Java , about 120 kilometers east of Madura and 121 kilometers north of Bali . The group consists of three main islands and about 60 islets, which form a slight curve in north-south orientation and have a total area of ​​668 km². To the west is the main island of Kangean (487 km²), which resembles a "C" in shape, from the ends of which two chains of islands extend. The southern chain is formed from west to east by the islands of Saubi (Saobi), Sabunten (Sabunting), Sapankur , Saur , Saebus , Saseel and , finally , Sepanjang , the second largest island in the group. The northern chain begins with the third largest island Paliat and its offshore islets Seranangan , Pindanah and Talenki . To the east are the islands of Bankan , Sapeken , Satabo , Sidulang Kecil (Little Sidulang), Saular , Sidulang Besar (Big Sidulang), the Pagerungan Islands Pagerungan Kecil (Little Pagerungan) and Pagerungan Besar (Big Pagerungan) and far to the east the island of Sakala .

The archipelago belongs to the province of East Java (government district Sumenep ) and is divided into the three districts ( Indonesian Kecematan ) Arjasa , Sapeken and Kangayangan . Arjasa forms the west of the archipelago, Kangayangan the east. Sapeken includes small islands in the east, such as Sapeken, Paliat, Sadulang Besar, Sadulang Kecil, Pagerungan Besar and Pagerungan Kecil.Sapeken, Paliat, Sidulang Besar, Sidulang Kecil, Pagerungan Besar and Pagerungan Kecil.

Kangean is generally flat with hills to the northeast reaching 364  m .

Main locations are Arjasa and Pabean on Kangean.

The climate is hot and humid, the sky is generally cloudy and there is heavy rainfall.

Flora and fauna

The hills of Kangean are covered with teak trees , coconut plantations can be found along the coast.

To the island fauna includes black-naped fruit dove (Ptilinopus melanospilus melanauchen) , tailed chicken (Gallus varius) , Reinwardt chicken (Megapodius reinwardt) , rear Cuckoo (Centropus sinensis) , Sultan Woodpecker (chrysocolaptes lucidus kangeanensis) , edible-nest swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus fuciphagus) and laced woodpecker (Picus vittatus) . The most conspicuous representative of the animal world is, besides monkeys and monitor lizards , the Java leopard .

population

The majority of the inhabitants profess Islam , which is strongly influenced by the traditional, local animistic religion . The Kangean language is closely related to Madurese , the language of the neighboring western island, and is spoken in various dialects. More and more immigrants are coming from Java.

Public facilities and transportation

Schooling on the islands only extends to middle school. For secondary school, students have to go to Java or other islands in Indonesia. Bicycle taxis and motorcycles are used as public transport. The main roads are now paved or asphalted. Electricity is only available from late afternoon until dawn, if at all.

economy

There is some agriculture and cattle breeding on the islands. Copra , fish, salt and wood are mainly exported to Bali. Natural gas has been produced off the islands since 1993 and piped to Java via a 430-kilometer pipeline. Pearl oyster farming is traditional . Money is also sent by expats working in Malaysia and Singapore .

Tourists can hike in the woods. There are also sandy beaches and coral reefs.

There are gas fields near the Pagerungan Islands.
