The Pagerungan Islands ( Indonesian Kepulauan Pagerungan ) are an Indonesian group of islands in the Bali Sea . They belong to the Kangean Islands . They lie northeast of Java , east of Madura and north of Bali .

geography

overview

The group consists of the islands Pagerungan Besar ( German  Groß-Pagerungan ) and Pagerungan Kecil ( German  Klein-Pagerungan ) with a total area of 9.15 km². They form the northeast of the Kangean Islands.

The two islands each form an administrative village (Desa) of the district ( Indonesian Kecamatan ) Sapeken in the administrative district ( Indonesian Kabupaten ) Sumenep of the province of East Java ( Indonesian Jawa Timur ).

On Pagerungan Besar is the place Mesigit , with the center in the west of the island, and the industrial area Torohhiga in the east. The village on the west coast of Pagerungan Kecils bears the name of the island.

There are coral reefs around the islands. Pagerungan Besar has mangrove swamps, Pagerungan Kecil is densely overgrown with coconut palms.

climate

The climate is tropical and is determined by the monsoons . The annual precipitation is 1500 to 2000 mm, the air temperature between 22 and 33 ° C. The water temperature is 26 to 29 ° C.

fauna and Flora

The marine ecosystem is typical of tropical waters. Flat limestone platforms provide the basis for macroalgae and seaweed. The coral reefs are important breeding grounds, living space and food resources for fish. Also green turtles ( Chelonia mydas ), hawksbill turtles ( Eretmochelys imbricata ) and dugongs ( Dugong dugon ) can be found here. Shorebirds benefit from the shallow reef waters. Some reefs show signs of damage, but mostly they are in good condition.

Residents

A total of 10,818 people live on the two islands (2010 census).

Economy and transportation

Fishing and some farming dominate the local economy. Fish is also exported from the islands, dried and salted. Gas fields have been used on the islands since 1994. For this purpose, an industrial plant of the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) is operated on Pagerungan Besar, which also has a runway and a large pier. Pipelines carry the gas to Surabaya . About a hundred residents of Pagerungan Besar work here.
