Baguia ( Bagia ) is an East Timorese administrative office ( Portuguese Posto Administrativo ) in the municipality of Baucau . The administrative headquarters are in Baguia in Suco Alawa Leten .

geography

Baguia mountains

Until 2014, the administrative offices were still referred to as sub-districts . Before the 2015 territorial reform, Baguia had an area of 213.99 km². Now there are 212.18 km².

The administrative office is located in the southeast of the municipality of Baucau. It is bordered by the Laga Administrative Office to the north, Quelicai to the west, the municipality of Viqueque to the south and the municipality of Lautém to the east . The Irebere (Irabere) and its tributaries, most of which arise in Baguia, form part of the border with Viqueque and Lautém . The Matebian ( 2316  m ), on the border with Quelicai, is the third highest mountain in East Timor (according to other sources, the second highest) and the highest in the municipality of Baucau. Two kilometers from the town of Baguia are the ruins of the Escola do Reino de Haudere school . After the Second World War it fell apart, so that today only the walls remain.

Baguia is divided into ten sucos: Afaloicai , Alawa Craik ( Alaua-Craik , Alaua Craic ), Alawa Leten ( Alaua-Leten ), Defawasi ( Defa-Uassi ), Hae Coni ( Hae-Coni , Haeconi ), Larisula ( Lari Sula ) , Lavateri , Osso Huna ( Osso-Huna , Ossuna, Osshuna ), Samalari and Uacala .

history

Retreat from the Indonesian invaders until 1978: The Matebian
Refugees in East Timor after the 2007 general election.

Thousands of years old rock paintings testify to a long settlement of the region around Baguia.

On June 10, 1959, insurgents attacked the Portuguese fort in Baguia during the Viqueque Rebellion . The attack could be repulsed, whereupon the rebels withdrew again to the Uato-Lari / Uatucarbau region .

In 1976, Baguia's mountainous terrain was a retreat for the FALINTIL , who fought against the Indonesian invaders. Here they founded a base de apoio , a resistance base that offered refuge for refugees from Lospalos , Baguia, Iliomar and Uatucarbau. The base was later destroyed by the Indonesians.

After the fall of the Matebian resistance base at the end of November 1978, thousands of people came to Baguia. They were forbidden to move further from the place and were closely guarded. Cholera , diarrhea and tuberculosis broke out. Of the people who came from Osso Huna alone, 280 people died. Other village communities mourn over 500 deaths.

At the end of 1979 there were Indonesian camps for East Timorese in Baguia and Ledana (Suco Lavateri), who were supposed to be relocated by the occupiers for better control.

On August 10, 2007, during the unrest after the 2007 parliamentary elections, the Convent of the Salesians of Don Bosco and the affiliated orphanage were attacked. Nine girls including an eight-year-old were raped. Before that, the rioters devastated the entire convention. The incident caused quite a stir and is considered to be one of the worst incidents during the riots. The perpetrators are said to be supporters of FRETILIN . The next day, a 16-year-old accused of raping the child was arrested. Several people in Baguia fled their homes due to the unrest.

In mid-July 2010, a landslide after heavy rainfall destroyed ten houses and 20 hectares of rice fields in what was then the sub-district.

At 2 a.m. on March 8, 2015, a group attacked the local police station with firearms and homemade explosives. Three police officers who stayed in the building as the bodyguard of President Vicente da Silva Guterres were injured. The President of Parliament was in town for the funeral of a relative and was in a nearby building, but was probably not the target of the attack and was unharmed. In addition to the police station, the local Liurai's house and at least two other houses also burned. Vehicles were also damaged. According to police sources, the attackers are said to belong to the Konseilu Revolusionariu Maupe (KRM, German  Revolutionary Council Maupe ) around Mauk Moruk . This denied a participation of the KRM.

Baguia market

The houses are mostly made of bamboo with a thatched roof. Rice is grown on terraces in the lower layers, corn and beans grow further up . 65% of households grow cassava, 62% corn, 54% coconuts, 35% rice, 25% coffee and 46% vegetables. Water buffalo are used to plow the land. Most places are only connected with very bad roads and can therefore only be reached on foot. The other villages are approached daily by a bus or truck that transports people and goods. In this way, the municipal capital Baucau can also be reached from Baguia in four hours. There is an irregular bus from Baguia that takes seven hours to the state capital Dili. Telephone and postal services are limited. Only the main town, Baguia, has electricity from a generator that only runs from seven in the evening until midnight.

Twice a week there is a market in Baguia.
