Lower Rhine Route

The "Lower Rhine Route" with a total length of more than 2,000 kilometers of Germany 's longest cycle paths located between Emmerich am Rhein in the north, Übach-Palenberg in the south, Niederkruechten the west and Schermbeck extends to the east. The route is divided into the 1,215 km long main route and around 820 km connecting routes. It opens up the bicycle-friendly landscape of the area away from busy roads via towpaths along the Rhine , asphalt farm roads and quiet forest paths. The many connecting routes along the route create a dense network.

The route guidance has not been maintained for several years, i. H. there are no signposts at some junctions.

The route of the NiederRheinroute leads through the following cities and communities: Alps , Übach-Palenberg , Bedburg-Hau , Brüggen (Niederrhein), Dinslaken , Dormagen , Duisburg , Emmerich am Rhein , Erkelenz , Gangelt , Geilenkirchen , Geldern , Goch , Grefrath (Niederrhein) , Grevenbroich , Hamminkeln , Hückelhoven , Hünxe , Heinsberg (Rhineland), Isselburg , Issum , Jüchen , Kaarst , Kalkar - (Lower Rhine), Kamp-Lintfort , Kempen (Lower Rhine), Kerken , Kevelaer , Kleve (Lower Rhine), Korschenbroich , Kranenburg ( Niederrhein), Krefeld , Mönchengladbach , Meerbusch , Moers , Nettetal , Neukirchen-Vluyn , Neuss , Niederkrüchten , Rees , Rheinberg , Rheurdt , Rommerskirchen , Schermbeck , Schwalmtal (Niederrhein), Selfkant , Sonsbeck , Straelen , Tönisvorst , Uedem , Viersen , Voerde ( Niederrhein), Wachtendonk , Waldfeucht , Wassenberg , Weeze , Wegberg , Wesel am Rhein, Willich , Xanten

Character of the route: Easy to navigate and sections are suitable for day trips with children and seniors. Trailers are suitable to a limited extent, as some poles stand in the way. Some measures make it impossible to drive through with a trailer.

Books on the route: The cycle guide of the same name, the NiederRheinroute, was published by Helmut Bauhüs eK Verlag until 2012. With 17 editions, this travel guide was one of the longest cycling maps on the Lower Rhine that have been in bookshops.
