The settlement (or settlement ) is a process of more or less planned, location-based settling down of humans and other living beings for the purpose of housing or permanent stay in the sense of setting the food item . In contrast to settlement, settlement primarily describes the further increase in population density of the previous settlement .

In contrast, evacuation refers to the planned and site-specific partial or complete abandonment of settlement areas, for example in planned mining areas or maneuvering areas - if the process is not planned , one speaks of desert traps .

In microbiology , colonization refers to the totality of microorganisms that live as local flora (or colonization flora, resident germs or commensals) on the inner and outer body surface of humans and other living beings, usually without causing an infection or disease .
