The parish of St. Georg is part of the Community of Communities (GDG) Korschenbroich together with the other four parishes of St. Andreas Korschenbroich , St. Dionysius Kleinenbroich , St. Marien Pesch and Herz Jesu Herrenshoff .

The parishes of Korschenbroich are part of the Diocese of Aachen , only the parish of St. Pankratius in the Glehn district is part of the Archdiocese of Cologne .

history

On April 1, 1862, Liedberg was elevated to a succursal or auxiliary parish by the Archbishop of Cologne and Cardinal von Geissel and assigned to the deanery M. Gladbach . Before that time, Liedberg belonged to the parish of Glehn .

Many years earlier, however, an independent church life had already taken place in Liedberg. In the year 1100 a Count Hermann, Herr von Liedberg, is mentioned who built a chapel opposite the today's mill tower , which dates from Roman times .

In 1654, the Liedbergers presented the wish to the Archbishop and Elector Max Heinrich of Cologne to build a new chapel and to celebrate church services. These goals were promoted under the Liedberger Vogt Damian Hermann Nideggen and on January 3, 1708 a new chapel, the castle chapel that still exists today, was consecrated by the Glehn pastor Jennes. In the same year the ceremonial inauguration took place by the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Werner von Veyder .

In 1859, the Liedbergers suggested their wish for their own parish church to the Archbishop of Cologne. But the groundbreaking did not take place until 1913 and in 1915 the parish was able to celebrate the inauguration of its new parish church St. Georg. The Liedbergers founded the St. Josephs Bauverein to raise the building funds. On June 6, 1915, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Felix Cardinal von Hartmann in the midst of a solemnly decorated parish . He consecrated the high altar in honor of the parish patron , St. George.

Liedberg was hit by a heavy Allied air raid on May 22, 1944. Most of the houses in the town had been damaged. At the church, the windows of the choir and the left aisle were destroyed.

After the war, the damage to the church building was repaired with the active and financial support of the parishioners, also with the support of the state curator, the diocesan master builder and the district cultural office.

In June 1990 the parish celebrated the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of the parish church.

On December 16, 1951 a new organ was inaugurated, which was made by the master organ builder Karl Kamp from Aachen. It has 21 registers with an electric console and an electric action.

Bells

The church has three bronze bells, which were cast by the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen in 1914 and 1954 . Two larger bells from 1914 had to be delivered in the First World War . They were replaced by new ones at the end of 1927. After the Second World War , both were renewed again in 1954. The consecration of bells took place on the 4th Sunday of Advent (December 19, 1954).
