Typical youngtimer: BMW E30 M3

Youngtimer is a term for older motor vehicles , especially passenger cars , which are used as enthusiast vehicles but are not yet oldtimers . Both terms are pseudo-Anglicisms , the comparable English terms are " classic car " and " modern classic ". The word youngtimer is unknown in the English language, " old-timer " is used there as a term for veterans , the elderly and as a play on words for Alzheimer's disease .

definition

In German usage , the limits for the age of a classic car are not precisely determined. For example, a car that is 15 years old is sometimes referred to as a youngtimer, the most common being 20 years. The upper limit is also open.

Classification of youngtimers

With good maintenance, youngtimers can be used for everyday use without any problems and are also sometimes used as utility vehicles. Often, however, they are kept in a state (or put back into such a state), so that when they reach 30 years of age with H-approval, they are converted to the status of classic cars. Some of them already have more modern technology and equipment comparable to new cars such as air conditioning , catalytic converters , electrically operated functions such as electric windows , an anti-lock braking system or airbags .

Types of youngtimers

Sports cars and luxury- class vehicles from the later 1980s and 1990s are particularly popular, as are rare coupés and convertibles of well-known mass-produced vehicles . Reasons for this are the once high purchase price and the safety equipment with ABS, airbag and power steering as well as the more opulent equipment and larger motorization. Advantages such as a large trunk or an economical engine, which speak in favor of smaller cars, play less of a role, so that small cars and small cars , especially automotive milestones such as the Fiat Panda, are seldom looked after by enthusiasts as youngtimers. Even compact and mid-range vehicles are less common than youngtimers. Extremely rare vehicles with small numbers of pieces can already be seen as sought-after youngtimers at the threshold of 10 years. For example, the BMW Z1 , which enthusiasts were looking for after a few years of discontinuation of production, or the Lancia Kappa Coupé , which was handcrafted in small numbers by a body shop.

Statutory Regulations

In Germany, a car between the ages of 20 and 30 was considered a young timer according to the 49th Exemption Ordinance to the StVZO . This regulation was valid until February 28, 2007, today the StVZO only contains a regulation from when vehicles are classified as oldtimers, which entitles these vehicles to be registered with a vintage license plate or a red license plate for oldtimers . The classic cars since then no longer under German law defines legal .

Advantages and disadvantages of youngtimers

With many insurance companies, youngtimers can usually be insured from the age of 20 at a cheaper tariff , whereby there are various requirements, e.g. B. Expert opinion on the condition, other vehicle in the household, mileage restriction, etc. Since Youngtimmers do not have an H license plate, they can be affected by driving bans in environmental zones , and they do not benefit from a more favorable classification in the vehicle tax . Finally, the maintenance and upkeep costs of youngtimers are higher than those of new cars, and the procurement of spare parts can be tedious or even impossible.
