John O'Connell

John Francis O'Connell ( Irish Seán Ó Conaill , born January 20, 1927 or 1930 in Dublin , † March 8, 2013 ) was an Irish politician . During his political career he was a member of the Irish Labor Party and later the Fianna Fáil ; he was both a member of the Dáil Éireann and a senator in the Seanad Éireann . As a member of parliament, he served as chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the Dáil Éireann; later he was Minister of Health.

O'Connell graduated in medicine and was after the promotion to Dr. med. active as a doctor.

He began his political career in 1965 when he was elected for the first time as a member of the Dáil Éireann as a candidate for the Irish Labor Party in the constituency of Dublin-South-West . In the following elections he was able to defend his mandate in this constituency, as well as in 1977 in the resulting constituency of Dublin Ballyfermot . He was also elected to the European Parliament in 1979. In 1981 he left, after disagreements with the party leadership, the Irish Labor Party and ran in the elections for the 22nd Dáil Éireann as an independent in the constituency of Dublin South Central . On June 30, 1981, he succeeded Pádraig Faulkner Chairman (Ceann Comhairle) of Dáil Éireann and then resigned as a member of the European Parliament . He kept the office of Ceann Comhairle during the 23rd Dáil Éireann until December 14, 1982. 1983 he moved to the Fianna Fáil .

In the elections for the 25th Dáil Éireann 1987 he lost and retired from the House of Commons. Instead he was nominated shortly afterwards by Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey for a seat in the Seanad Éireann. He belonged to this until 1989, when he was re-elected to the Dáil Éireann. From February 11, 1992 to January 12, 1993 he held the post of Minister of Health in Albert Reynolds' cabinet . On February 24, 1993, he resigned his parliamentary mandate for health reasons.
