Stephen Donnelly (* 14. December 1975 in Delgany, County Wicklow ) is an Irish politician of Fianna Fáil , which since 2011 Member ( Member of Dáil Éireann ) of Dáil Éireann , the lower house of parliament ( Oireachtas ) , and, since 2020 Health Minister in the Government Martin is.

Life

Stephen Donnelly, son of an entrepreneur and a teacher, studied mechanical engineering at University College Dublin (UCD) and worked as a working student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2000 he began his professional career as a management consultant with the management consultancy McKinsey & Company in London , having previously worked for the family business Hickey Fabricshad worked. He specialized in transformation changes for large organizations in the public and private sector, but also in the areas of private equity, retail, public infrastructure, healthcare, education, international development, the voluntary and social sector. While there, he began postgraduate studies in international development at Harvard Kennedy School , which he completed in 2008 with a Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a focus on rebuilding economies and protecting and strengthening vulnerable populations.

In the elections of February 25, 2011 Donnelly ran against the background of the growing economic and social crisis in the constituency of Wicklow as a non-party and was elected for the first time as a member ( Teachta Dála ) of Dáil Éireann , the lower house of parliament ( Oireachtas ) . On July 15, 2015, he was one of the founders of the Social Democrats (Daonlathaigh Shóisialta) with the two also non-party MPs Catherine Murphy and Róisín Shortall and together with them became party chairman and joint lead candidate in the elections on February 26, 2016 . He was re-elected in the Wicklow constituency , but resigned as joint chairman and left the party on September 5, 2016. After he subsequently belonged to the Dáil Éireann again as a non-party , he became a member of the liberal - conservative Fianna Fáil (FF) in February 2017 . For this he was re-elected as a member of the Dáil Éireann in the elections on February 8, 2020 in the Wicklow constituency.

Stephen Donnelly was appointed Minister for Health in the Martin government on June 27, 2020 .

His marriage to Susan Leavy in 2005 resulted in three children.
