Barry Desmond (born May 15, 1935 in Cork ) is a former Irish trade union official and politician of the Irish Labor Party .

biography

Desmond, who worked as a union official at the Confederation of Irish Trade Unions ( Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) ), began his political career as a candidate for the Irish Labor Party in 1969 with the election to the House of Commons. There he first represented the constituency of Dún Laoghaire and Rathdown until 1977 and then until 1989 the constituency of Dún Laoghaire .

After the formation of a coalition government with the Fine Gael under Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald , he was Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance between June 1981 and March 1982 and, as the “junior minister” there, was responsible for economic planning.

Prime Minister FitzGerald appointed him on December 14, 1982 in his second coalition government of Fine Gael and Labor Party as Minister for Social Welfare. He held this office until February 14, 1986 and was Minister of Health from December 14, 1982 until his resignation on January 20, 1987.

In 1989 he decided not to run again for the House of Commons and instead entered the European Parliament elections . After his election on June 15, 1989, he was a member of the 3rd European Parliament until 1994 .

His father, Cornelius "Con" Desmond, was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1966 to 1967 .
