Gemma Hussey

Gemma Hussey (born November 11, 1938 in Dublin ) is an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

Gemma Hussey was initially a civil servant and most recently director of the Institute for the English Language in Dublin.

She began her political career in 1977 with an appointment as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), in which she was first as a non-party and then from 1981 to 1982 as a member of the Fine Gael one of the three representatives of the National University of Ireland . She was then elected a member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented the interests of the Wicklow constituency in this until 1989 .

After Fine Gael's election victory, she was appointed Minister of Education on December 14, 1982 by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald . After a government reshuffle, she took over the office of Minister for Social Welfare on February 14, 1986 and held this office until the end of FitzGerald's term on March 10, 1987. At the same time, she was also Minister of Labor between January 1 and March 10, 1987 .

In 1989, she decided not to run again in the general election and left the Dáil Éireann.
