Joan Burton

Joan Burton ( Irish Siobhán de Bhurtúin , born February 1, 1949 ) is an Irish politician and chaired the Irish Labor Party from July 4, 2014 to May 20, 2016 .

Life

After studying at University College Dublin , Joan Burton initially worked as a sworn accountant before she was later lecturer in accounting at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and visiting professor at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

After an unsuccessful bid in 1989 it was in 1992 as a candidate of the Irish Labor Party for the first time to MPs ( Member of Dáil Éireann ) in the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) selected and represented there first until 1997 the constituency Dublin West . During this time she was Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Welfare from January to November 1994 in the "rainbow coalition" of Fine Gael, Irish Labor Party and Democratic Left , led by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) John Bruton . After a government reshuffle, she was Minister of State in the Foreign Ministry from December 1994 to June 1997 and as such was responsible for overseas development aid and humanitarian aid.

After their electoral defeat in 1997 she lost her mandate in the House and was in the municipal election in 1999 in constituency Castleknock County Council of a member Fingal ( Fingal County Council ) selected. In 2002 she was again elected to the House of Commons, in which she has since again represented the constituency of Dublin West . In 2007, Joan Burton was also elected Vice-Chair of the Irish Labor Party.

On March 9, 2011, the new Prime Minister Enda Kenny appointed her as Minister of Social Affairs in the Irish government after the formation of the coalition of Fine Gael and Irish Labor Party . From 2014 to 2016 she was Tánaiste .

In the elections for the Dáil Éireann 2020 , she lost her mandate again.
