John Bruton

John Gerard Bruton ( Irish : Seán de Briotún ; born May 18, 1947 in Dunboyne , County Meath ) is an Irish politician and was Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) of the Republic of Ireland .

Life

Bruton graduated from University College Dublin with a law degree . In 1969 he was elected as the youngest member of the Irish Parliament to date, a member of which he was a continuous member until 2004. From 1981 to 1982 and from 1986 to 1987 he was Minister of Finance, 1982 to 1983 Minister for Industry and Energy and from 1983 to 1986 Minister for Industry, Trade, Economy and Tourism.

In 1990 he was elected chairman of the Fine Gael party. He held this office until 2001. From 1994 to 1997 he served as Irish Prime Minister with a rainbow coalition. Under his administration , the peace process in Northern Ireland intensified and the Irish economy experienced strong growth. In 1996 he was the EU Council President. From 2004 to 2009 he was Head of the European Commission Delegation in the United States .
