The Provisional Government in 1916

On the first day of the Easter Rising in Dublin on April 24, 1916 , Patrick Pearse read the Easter Proclamation . This proclamation was signed by the " Provisional Government of the Irish Republic ". The uprising was quickly put down, leaving the Provisional Government only for a short time on paper.

The individual signatories of the proclamation were:

The Provisional Government in 1922

The "Provisional Government" ( Provisional Government ) was in British politics history in 1922, the transitional government of Southern Ireland from the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty until the creation of the Irish Free State . It is also called "Provisional Government of Ireland" ( Provisional Government of Ireland ) and also due to the fact that you do not influence to Northern Ireland still went, as the "Provisional Government of Southern Ireland" ( Provisional Government of Southern Ireland called).

Under the Dáil Constitution of the Irish Republic of 1919, Dáil Éireann (the revolutionary parliament of the Irish Republic) continued to exist after the treaty. Eamon de Valera gave up the presidency, which led to a new election. De Valera tried in this way to undermine the treaty that was recently adopted by the Dáil, but Arthur Griffith won the election and became President (Griffith called himself President of the Dáil Éireann - as opposed to de Valera, who preferred the President of the Republic ).

However, this government had no official powers under British law, so that a co-existing government emerged, which - in theory - was responsible to the House of Commons in Southern Ireland . It was chaired by Michael Collins .

After the death of Collins and Griffith in August 1922, WT Cosgrave took over both the office of President of the Dáil Éireann and that of the Chairman of the Provisional Government, so that the two offices merged. In December 1922, both Southern Ireland and the Irish Republic were replaced by the Irish Free State , a Dominion of the United Kingdom .
