Richie Ryan (politician)

Richard "Richie" Ryan ( Irish : Risteard Ó Riain ) (* 27. February 1929 in Dublin ; † 17th March 2019 ) was a politician of the Fine Gael and ministers.

Life

Ryan went to Synge Street CBS University in Dublin (UCD), where he studied economics and law . After studying law , Ryan practiced as a lawyer . He then left the Incorporated Law School of Ireland as a lawyer. After training, Ryan worked for a number of law firms before starting a private practice in Dublin, where he remained an active partner until his appointment as Minister in 1973.

Ryan was the father of economist Cillian Ryan .

Career

He began his political career in 1959 with the election to the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented the interests of Fine Gael in constituencies in the south of Dublin until February 1982 . Ryan was appointed Treasury Secretary to the first Fine Gael government since 1957 by Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave on March 14, 1973 . From November 1, 1973, he was also the first Irish Minister for Public Service. After Fine Gael's electoral defeat, he left the cabinet on July 5, 1977.

In the general election in February 1982 he decided not to run again in order to concentrate entirely on his seat in the European Parliament , to which he had belonged since January 1973. In May 1986 he resigned his mandate there and Chris O'Malley moved up for him in the European Parliament.
