Liam Kavanagh

Liam Kavanagh (born December 9, 1935 ) is a former Irish politician of the Irish Labor Party .

biography

Kavanagh, who worked as an employee of the tax revenue office in the public service, began his national political career as a candidate for the Irish Labor Party in 1969 with the first election to the deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) elected. After eight subsequent re-elections, he represented the interests of the Wicklow constituency for 28 years until 1997.

As such, he was also delegated to the European Parliament after Ireland joined in 1973 and 1977 . In 1979 he was finally elected a member of the 1st European Parliament . He belonged to this until his resignation and his replacement by Séamus Pattison until June 1981.

After his resignation, he was appointed Minister of Labor and Minister of Civil Service in the coalition government of Fine Gael and the Irish Labor Party on June 30, 1981 by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald . He held this office until the end of FitzGerald's tenure on March 9, 1982.

In the second coalition government of Fine Gael and Irish Labor Party, Taoiseach FitzGerald appointed him again as Minister of Labor on December 14, 1982. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed Environment Minister on December 13, 1983. Most recently he was Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry in this government from February 14, 1986 until his resignation on January 20, 1987.

Most recently, Kavanagh was during his last term in the Dáil from May 1993 to January 1995 and from March 1995 to May 1997 Vice Chairman of the House Committee on State Sponsored Bodies Committee .
