Tom Nolan (politician)

Thomas "Tom" Nolan ( Irish Tomás Ó Nualláin , born July 27, 1921 in Myshall , County Carlow , † August 17, 1992 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

After attending school, he joined the Irish Armed Forces (Óglaigh na hÉireann) . After retiring from active military service, he was nominated by the then Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Seán Lemass as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) in 1961 and thus began his political career for the Fianna Fáil.

He was then elected for the first time in 1965 as a member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála of the Lower House ( Dáil Éireann )) and represented the interests of the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency in this after four subsequent re-elections until 1982 . At the same time he was a delegated member of the European Parliament from 1973 to 1979 after Ireland joined the European Communities .

On March 25, 1980, Prime Minister Charles J. Haughey appointed him Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, taking on his first government office as "Junior Minister". As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was then appointed Minister of Labor on December 16, 1980 and was a member of Haughey's first government until the end of its term on June 30, 1981.

After leaving politics, he worked as a wholesaler.
