John M. Kelly

John Maurice Kelly (born August 31, 1931 , † January 24, 1991 ) was an Irish university professor , politician of the Fine Gael and several ministers.

biography

Kelly completed a law degree and then worked as a pleading attorney ( barrister ). Later he was appointed university professor.

His political career began as a candidate for Fine Gael in 1969 when he was elected a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), in which he represented the culture and education group until 1973. In 1973 he was elected a Member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ), to which he belonged until 1989 and in which he represented constituencies of the south of Dublin .

During the first Fine Gael government since 1957, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in March 1973 by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Liam Cosgrave as Parliamentary Secretary in his office. In addition, he was temporarily also Parliamentary Secretary in the Defense and Foreign Ministry. Most recently, he was Attorney General in the Lynch cabinet from May to July 1977 .

Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald then appointed him Foreign Minister and Minister of Commerce, Trade and Tourism in his government on June 30, 1981 . After a few months, he was replaced as Secretary of State by James Dooge on October 21, 1981 , but retained the post of Minister of Commerce, Trade and Tourism until the end of FitzGerald's term on March 9, 1982.
