Jimmy Deenihan ( Irish : Séamus Ó Duibhneacháin ) (* 11. September 1952 in Finuge , Lixnaw , County Kerry ) is an Irish politician of Fine Gael , which is also for many years a successful Gaelic football - and rugby union was poker players.

Life

After studying at St. Michael's College Listowel and the Thomond College of Education in Limerick , Deenihan worked as a teacher . From 1973 to 1982 he also played on the position of right-corner back Gaelic football at Finuge GAA and won the Munster Senior Football Championship seven times and five times in 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 for the County Kerry team the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship . He was most recently team captain in 1981.

After an unsuccessful candidacy for the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) in November 1982, he was nominated in 1983 by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) and was a member of this until 1987.

In 1987 he was elected member of the Fine Gael ( Teachta Dála ) for the first time and represented the constituency of Kerry North until 2011 . During this time he was from December 20, 1994 to June 26, 1997 Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry in the "rainbow coalition" of Fine Gael, Irish Labor Party and Democratic Left , led by Prime Minister John Bruton .

In the local elections in 1999 he was also elected with the best result in the constituency Listowel to a member of the County Council of County Kerry ( Kerry County Council ). In the 2011 elections he was re-elected to the House of Commons and now represents the interests of the Kerry North-Limerick West constituency .

On March 9, 2011, the new Prime Minister, Enda Kenny, appointed him Minister for Art and the Irish-Speaking Territories ( Gaeltacht ) in the Irish government , a position he lost to his party colleague Heather Humphreys in the cabinet reshuffle on July 12, 2014 .
