All-Ireland Senior Football Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship ( Irish Craobh Shinsear Peile na hÉireann ) is often referred to as the Bank of Ireland Football Championship after the main sponsor . It is the main annual competition in Gaelic football and is organized by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The games take place from May to September. The final, called the All-Ireland Final, was held on the third or fourth Sunday in September until 2017, and since then on the 35th Sunday of the year at Croke Park in Dublin . The winner receives the Sam Maguire Cup (Irish Corn Shomhairle Mhic Uidhir ).

Competition mode

Selection teams from 31 of the 32 counties in Ireland take part in the championship. Only Kilkenny does not participate. The Irish abroad are represented by teams from London and New York . The championship is held in a knockout system. If a game ends in a draw, there is a replay on the opponent's court, played until the decision is made. First of all, regional championships will take place in the four provinces of Leinster , Munster , Ulster and Connacht (including London and New York). The respective champion is directly qualified for the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland Championship. The teams eliminated in the knockout rounds at regional level still have a second chance to qualify for the quarter-finals.

This qualifying round of the eliminated teams works according to the following principle:

  • Round 1: This round includes all counties (except New York) that did not qualify for the semi-finals of their province. There are 16 teams in total.
  • Round 2: In this round, the eight winners from round 1 and the eight losers of the provincial semi-finals take place.
  • Round 3: Participants are the eight winners from round 2.
  • Round 4: The four losers from the provincial finals play against the four winners from round 3.

In the quarter-finals, two groups of four are played with the provincial champions and the winners from round 4. This is followed by the semi-finals and final. This system was introduced in 2001, with the quarter-final groups only replacing the classic quarter-finals in 2018 to allow more games but still maintain the knockout system and provincial championships. Before 2001 there were only the four provincial championships, the winners of which contested the semi-finals and finals.

The previous winners

The championship has been held since 1887. So far 19 counties have entered the list of winners. The most successful teams come from the provinces of Leinster and Munster. Record winner is Kerry from Munster with 37 titles.
