Vegetative characteristics

The wire-haired laser herb is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 60 centimeters. The above-ground parts of the plant are more or less hairy. The upright stem is round, finely grooved and simply or slightly branched.

The short-stalked basal leaves have a very large, up to 50 centimeters long, triangular leaf blade that is four to five pinnate and finally divided into five to seven narrow linear sections. The leaf blades of the stem leaves are less divided and sit on the leaf sheaths.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to September. The hemispherical, double-gold inflorescence has 15 to 40 rays that are rough inside. The numerous bracts are clearly lanceolate, the edge is ciliate and the tip is often tridentate. The husk leaves are almost completely membranous.

The hermaphroditic flowers have a double flower envelope . The calyx teeth are sub-lanceolate. The white or initially reddish petals are twice as long as the sepals.

The fruit is yellow-brown and its wings are yellowish.

Occurrence

Laserpitium halleri occurs scattered in the Alps , the pre-Alps and on Corsica . It has occurrences in France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.

The wire-haired laser herb thrives on soils at altitudes of 1000 to over 2500 meters . It mostly thrives on sunny, stony, dry, soil-free grasslands in the central Alps . It is a character species of the Festucion variae association.

Subspecies

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Laserpitium halleri Crantz subsp. halleri
  • Laserpitium halleri subsp. cynapiifolium (DC.) P. Fourn. (Syn .: Ligusticum cynapiifolium DC. ): It occurs only in Corsica.
