Torstein Stenersen (born October 16, 1988 ) is a former Swedish and previously Norwegian biathlete .

Career

Beginnings

Torstein Stenersen starts for Maalselv IL . He has been competing in international races since 2007, initially among the juniors in the European Cup . The first men's races in the IBU Cup followed in 2012 . With 23rd place in the Ridnaun sprint , he already won points in the first race, in the pursuit race based on this he achieved his best position in the racing series with eleventh place. In 2015 Stenersen came to his first appearances in the Biathlon World Cup after switching from the Norwegian to the Swedish federation and several appearances for Sweden in the IBU Cup . He benefited from a Swedish team in upheaval, after the long-term supporters Björn Ferry and Carl Johan Bergman had resigned at the end of the preseason and many of the biathletes who had previously been used could not show the desired performance. Stenersen was 94th in the sprint race in Antholz and 13th in the relay race with Ted Armgren , Fredrik Lindström and Gabriel Stegmayr . The first international championships were the 2015 European Biathlon Championships in Otepää , where he finished 60th in the sprint 43rd and 51st in the pursuit race. With Gabriel Stegmayr, Simon Hallström and Niklas Forsberg , he was also tenth with the Swedish relay. He then achieved his best place in the World Cup with 42nd place in the World Cup sprint at Holmenkollen in Oslo and only missed the points by two places.

Years in the World Cup (2015/16 to end of career)

At the beginning of the new season , Stenersen started again in the IBU Cup and achieved his best placement in the IBU Cup with a ninth place in the sprint in Ridnaun. After the turn of the year, he started again in individual races in the World Cup in 2016 . First, with a 42nd place in the pursuit in Ruhpolding, he again just missed a place in the points. In the second week of competition in Ruhpolding, Stenersen was among the top 10 athletes in the World Cup for the first time with a mistake in the individual and the resulting seventh place and received his first World Cup points. Due to his good placement, he also qualified for the mass start, which he finished 22nd. In the remaining individual races of the season, he could not build on his performance from the individual race. With Ingela Andersson , he finished ninth in the singles mixed competition in Canmore and seventh at the Biathlon World Championships in Oslo in 2016 with the Swedish men's relay. In the overall ranking of the season he reached the 59th place and in the discipline ranking of the individual race 29th place.

The season 2016/17 started Stenersen at the World Cup opener in domestic Östersund . He started again in the single mixed competition and was fourth together with Linn Persson . He also started the rest of the season in the World Cup but was only able to achieve a place in the points with a 37th place at the individual World Championships . In the following season he started again in both the IBU Cup and the World Cup . In the World Cup he was only able to win points in his first race in Östersund with a 36th place. In the IBU Cup he was ranked among the top 30 athletes several times.

The season season 2018/19 started Stenersen with two top ten finishes in the IBU Cup in Idre . He then started at the World Cup in Hochfilzen . After he could not qualify for the pursuit with a 62nd place in the sprint, he won the relay race together with Peppe Femling , Martin Ponsiluoma and Sebastian Samuelsson .

In the 2019/20 season , a 43rd place in the Annecy sprint was his best individual result.

He then ended his career as an active biathlete in April 2020. His last race was the Nové Město sprint , in which he was 93rd.
