2001 European Women's Volleyball Championship

The 2001 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in Bulgaria from September 22nd to 30th . The games were played in Sofia and Varna . Russia won the title for the 17th time.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The third and fourth played for places five to eight.

Germany played with Christina Benecke , Andrea Berg , Béatrice Dömeland , Angelina Grün , Tanja Hart , Ulrike Jurk , Ina Mäser , Hanka Pachale , Kathy Radzuweit , Sylvia Roll , Judith Sylvester and Birgit Thumm . The coach was Lee Hee-wan .

qualification

Bulgaria was set as the host. The top three teams from the 1999 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Russia as defending champions, second Croatia and third Italy .

Twelve teams played for eight more places in the finals. In three groups of four they competed against every opponent at home and away. The two best teams in each group and the two best thirds in the group qualified.
