Birgit Thumm (born July 3, 1980 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) is a former German national volleyball player . During her active time, she was considered the best German universal player in terms of technology.

Career

Birgit Thumm began her career at the age of 10 at TSV Herbrechtingen in the school group of the Buigengymnasium. At the age of 14 she switched to the volleyball part-time boarding school of TV Creglingen , where she made her debut in the 1st Bundesliga in 1995 as the youngest Bundesliga player. In 1999 she moved to the newly promoted SSV Ulm 1846 , which she left after a year. For sporting reasons, she moved to DJK Karbach in 2000 . In 2003, she finally came to the Bundesliga USC Munster . After the runner-up with the USC, she moved to the Rote Raben Vilsbiburg in 2003 . In the 2007/08 season, Birgit Thumm played for health reasons for the second division Allianz Volley Stuttgart and thanks to her many years of volleyball experience, she was promoted to the top division of the 1st Bundesliga in just one year. From 2008 to 2011 she played for the German cup winner VfB 91 Suhl . Birgit Thumm has been a player-coach at SSV Ulm 1846 since 2011, with whom she was promoted to the Third League South in 2012 . As a trainer, she has been leading the youth work in her home town of Herbrechtingen since 2013.

In 1999 she made her debut in the senior national team and in the same year reached fourth place at the European Championships in Italy . At the less successful EM 2001 she was also in the DVV selection. After the disappointing World Cup in 2002 in her own country, Thumm had to take a longer break at the beginning of 2003 because of a rupture of the Achilles tendon , so that she could not participate in the European Championships in Turkey , in which the team took third place. At the Olympic Games in Athens , however, the volleyball player, who had proven themselves in several positions, was fit again. At the 2006 World Cup in Japan, it was only enough for eleventh place. Due to a knee injury sustained at this tournament, she then resigned from the national team.
