Traces of the Porta Praetoriana on the outside of the Praetorian camp.

The Porta Praetoriana was one of the four gates of the fortified camp of the Praetorian Guard , the castra praetoria , in Rome . It and parts of the north and east fortifications of the camp were integrated into the Aurelian Wall between 271 and 273 AD . The gate, which originated before Aurelian and can be clearly distinguished from the Aurelian wall by the technique of its brickwork, can only be recognized by traces, as it was removed at the beginning of the 4th century and the passages closed. It was flanked by two towers.
