Arnold Schulz (born January 25, 1943 in Gembitz , today in Poland ) is a former volleyball player and referee from the GDR .
Schulz was a footballer and boxer in his youth and began volleyball in 1960. The trainer Herbert Jenter brought him to the SC Rotation Leipzig , from 1963 the club acted as SC Leipzig . Schulz won nine championship titles with SC Leipzig.
From 1962 Schulz also played in the GDR national team . His first major tournament was the 1963 European Championship with a ninth place. From 1966 until 1972 the GDR selection reached a place among the best four teams in all major tournaments. Schulz was named the best attacking player of the tournament at the 1966 World Cup in Prague. In 1969 he won the Volleyball World Cup and the following year he was there when the GDR team won the title at the 1970 World Cup in Bulgaria. After a fourth place at the European Championships in 1971 , the GDR team reached the final at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and received the silver medal after the final defeat against the Japanese team .
Arnold Schulz worked as a volleyball referee after his sports career. After serving as a referee at the 1982 World Cup in Argentina, he did not return to the GDR, but moved to Munich via Vienna. His efforts to bring the family back were rejected by the GDR authorities. In December 1984 the GDR lawyer Wolfgang Vogel succeeded in arranging for Arnold Schulz's family to leave the country. Schulz later worked as a sports teacher at the Technical University of Munich . In addition, he volunteered in the state performance center of the Bavarian Volleyball Association and as a trainer in Unterschleißheim and Munich.
