Howard Rheingold (* 1947 in Arizona , USA ) is an American social scientist and author. For decades he has dealt with the socio-cultural and political effects of new technologies and the forms of communication that they make possible.

Life

Howard Rheingold has psychology at Reed College of the State University of New York studied. Since 1985 he has participated in The WELL - which can best be described as a bulletin board system . In 1994 he helped found Hotwired , Wired's website .

With his 1993 book " Virtual Community - Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier ", Rheingold coined the term "virtual community" in 1993. In his publication Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution (2002), he examined how internet and lifestyle technologies contribute to cross-border collaboration and the emergence of collectively intelligent systems. His most recent work “ Net Smart: How to Thrive Online ” (2012) deals with the intelligent use of new information and communication technologies for information filtering and transfer.
