European volleyball league
The Volleyball -Europaliga (official name: European League) is a European competition for national teams. The men's tournament has been held annually since 2004. In 2009 there was a European league for women for the first time.
Regulations
The rules of the competition are determined by the CEV . The qualified teams first compete against each other in a preliminary round. To do this, they are divided into several groups. The exact procedure of the preliminary round as well as the number of participants in the history of the Europa League has been changed several times. The best teams in the preliminary round qualify alongside the host for the Final Four.
history
The Europa League was set up as a continental supplement to the World League in order to give the weaker teams more match practice. In the first year the Czech Republic was able to use its home advantage in the Final Four. A year later, the Russians also won the title in front of their own audience. In 2006 in Turkey , the host did not make it into the top three for the first time. Instead, the Dutch won the final. In 2007 Spain prevailed against hosts Portugal in the final . At the Final Four 2008, which took place in Turkey for the second time, Slovakia won the competition as the fifth team. In 2009 there was the first success for Germany in the men 's competition , while Serbia was the first winner of the women's competition. In 2010 the Portuguese won the competition for the first time, while the women's selection from Serbia achieved their second success in a row. In 2011, the Serbians became European women's league champions for the third time in a row. In the men's category, the Spaniards reached their fourth final in five years, but they were unsuccessful for the third time in a row - this time they lost to the hosts from Slovakia , who won their second European league since 2008. In 2012, the Netherlands was able to enter the men's list for the second time after 2006 with a narrow 3-2 win over hosts Turkey in Ankara. For women, the Czech Republic won the Europa League for the first time. In 2013, the German women won their first participation, while the Belgians won the men . In 2014, Turkey defeated defending champions Germany in the women's final. In the men's competition, Montenegro won its first international title.
