The Samoan national rugby league team , also known by its nickname Toa Samoa , represents Samoa internationally in the sport of rugby league . It is one of the strongest national teams in the world, regularly takes part in the Rugby League World Cup and occupies one of the top positions in the RLIF World Rankings .
history
In 1986 the team, which was still called "West Samoa", played their first game and defeated Tokelau 34:12. In 1990 and 1992 Samoa won the Pacific Cup and thus its only title in international tournaments to date. At its World Cup premiere in 1995 , the team failed in the preliminary round after a triumphant 56:10 against France to Wales . In 2000, Samoa survived the group games, but had no chance in the quarter-finals against Australia . After another preliminary round from 2008 , Samoa failed in the quarterfinals in 2013 against Pacific rivals Fiji . In 2014 the team took part in the prestigious Four Nations tournament for the first time . At the 2017 World Cup , Samoa disappointed, while Pacific rivals Tonga and Fiji caused a sensation and were eliminated without a win.
