Australian Football International Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Australian Football International Cup is an Australian rules football tournament that is virtually the world championship for all countries outside Australia (the only country where this sport is practiced professionally). The first International Cups took place in Melbourne and Wangaratta in 2002 and 2005 and in Melbourne and Warrnambool in August and September 2008 .

history

The first International Australian Football Council (IAFC) was founded in Darwin in 1995. Australian football was currently played by several international teams at the Arafura Games. One of the goals of the IAFC was to host an Australian Football World Cup, probably in 2008.

Due to the rapid growth of leagues and clubs in new countries, the first Cup was held in 2002. The IAFC asked the Australian Football League for financial and logistical support, but the AFL demanded a name change to International Cup instead of World Cup .

International Cup 2002

Eleven national teams took part in the first cup: Japan, South Africa, Denmark, the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Nauru, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. All games took place in Melbourne and Geelong .

Ireland beat Papua New Guinea 51-19 in the final.

International Cup 2005

For financial reasons, Nauru and Denmark could not take part in the second cup. But Spain came as a newcomer, and the ten national teams were divided into two groups.

New Zealand won the final against Papua New Guinea 50-32.

International Cup 2008

16 national teams took part in the 2008 IC. In addition to the countries that had already been represented at the IC, Sweden , Finland , the People's Republic of China , India , and Israel - Palestine were newcomers.

Papua New Guinea won the final 54-46 against New Zealand.
