Jacques Delcourt (born August 21, 1928 in Le Touquet , † November 19, 2011 near Paris ) was a French karateka ( 6th Dan ), sports official and officer of the Legion of Honor . He was the co-founder and president of various karate associations such as the European Karate Federation and the World Union of Karate Do Organizations .

Life

At the age of 15, Jacques Delcourt fought in the French Resistance . He was wounded in combat a year later and, after recovering in 1944, was assigned to the 110th French Infantry Regiment . After the war he became a student of the European karate pioneer Henry Plée in his dojo in the 5th arrondissement of Paris .

Together with other karatekas, he soon began to improve the organizational structures of karate. In 1961 he became President of the French Judo Federation, Karate Section. On December 15, 1963, together with other European karatekas, he founded the European Karate Association ( EKU ) and in 1970 the World Karate Association WUKO . In 1975 he was involved in renaming the Karate section to the French Martial Arts Association, Fédération Française de Karaté et Disciplines Associées (FFKDA).

Until 1997 Delcourt was EKU President. However, he remained EKU Honorary President and a member of the Executive Committee. From 1980 to 1992 he was a member of the French Olympic Committee. Jacques Delcourt also took over the presidency of Ryoichi Sasakawa at WUKO and remained its president until 1998. In 1970 he organized the first ever karate world championships in Tokyo . Before that, he had already organized the first European karate championships in Paris in 1966 .

Jacques Delcourt studied law and has a master's degree in law .

He was named an Officer of the Legion of Honor on December 20, 2008 and was a Knight of the National Order of Merit .

Jacques Delcourt died on November 19, 2011 in his home south of Paris . The funeral took place on November 25, 2011 in the cemetery on Avenue du Général Leclerc in Champigny-sur-Yonne.
