The film premiered in German-speaking cinemas on March 28, 1964.

action

In newly annexed California, the Yankees, led by Governor Parker, are putting pressure on their despised Hispanic people to be evicted from their lands. César de Echagüe, who comes from a family of ranchers, is considered a coward and show-off, but in reality and in secrecy he is "El Coyote", who fights these injustices with a gun and a mask. His fiancée Leonor suffers greatly from his public reputation until she - El Coyote finally exposes the machinations of Governor Parker and his helpers - realizes what she has in her César.

criticism

The lexicon of international films criticized the basic attitude of the film, which shows "adventurous entertainment in the Zorro style with subliminal justification for vigilante justice" . Christian Keßler notices the significantly higher proportion of westerns compared to Il segno di Zorro, which was shot by the director directly before, and explains: "The villains of the film are a real asset". The film is very fast-paced and "rewind its undemanding action efficiently and without accidents". The French R. Tabès gave a very similar judgment.

Remarks

Numerous Italian and primarily Spanish actors can be found in supporting roles, who in the following years were among the regular character actors of the Spaghetti Westerns ( Raf Baldassarre , José Jaspe , Miguel Del Castillo , Fernando Sancho , Andrea Scotti , Fernando Hilbeck and others).

The music for the film - attributed to Manuel Parada in the Spanish version of the film - appeared on CD in 1998 (together with De Masi's compositions for the much later Django and Sabata - like bloody vultures ).
