The Karate World Championship 1970 ( English 1970 World Karate Championships ) was the first karate world championship in history. It was held from October 10 to October 13, 1970 in Tokyo , Japan by the WUKO World Union of Karate Do Organizations . A total of 178 karatekas from 26 nations were at the start. In the individual ranking on Ippon there were still no weight classes . Japan was the most successful nation with a total of four medals , with Koji Wada's individual victory and the first three places in the team standings (Japan E, ahead of Japan C, and Japan B). Only two judges out of 40 judges were not from Japan. The German champion Richard Scherer from Mannheim reached the quarter-finals , where he was defeated by the eventual world champion Koji Wada.
