Barry Eugene "Butch" Wilmore (born December 29, 1962 in Murfreesboro , State of Tennessee , USA ) is an American astronaut .

education

After graduating from high school, Wilmore studied at Tennessee Technological University , where he received both a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering . He also received a Masters in Aviation Systems Engineering from the University of Tennessee .

Military career

After completing his studies, Wilmore was recruited by the United States Navy , where he gained over 5900 hours of flight experience while serving as a pilot. He was involved in four foreign missions of the US armed forces, which took him to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iraq , among others . Wilmore flew missions in the course of these deployments in the Vought A-7 and F / A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft and completed 21 combat missions during the Second Gulf War .

Wilmore later trained as a test pilot and tried out a modified version of the BAE Hawk training aircraft . At the time of his appointment to the NASA astronaut squad, he was working as a flight instructor for the United States Air Force .

Astronaut activity

In July 2000, Wilmore became a member of NASA's 18th astronaut group as a pilot. After completing his two-year basic training, he took on technical duties in the astronaut office at the Johnson Space Center .

Wilmore was nominated for the STS-129 space shuttle mission in September 2008 . He started on November 16, 2009 as a pilot of the space shuttle Atlantis to the International Space Station (ISS) .

On September 25, 2014, Wilmore was brought to the International Space Station (ISS) on board the Soyuz TMA-14M as a member of ISS Expedition 41 . After decoupling from Soyuz TMA-13M on November 10, 2014, he took command of ISS Expedition 42 . The return to earth took place on March 12, 2015.
