Moon Sung-kil (born July 20, 1963 in Yeongam County , Jeollanam-do , South Korea ) is a former South Korean boxer in bantam and super flyweight and world champion of the associations WBC and WBA as well as amateur world champion .

Amateur career

Among the amateurs, Moon only competed in the bantamweight division and took part in the 1984 Olympic Games . He struck in his second fight the British John Hyland at the third-round classic o K., and in his third fight the Americans Robert Shannon by demolition in round 3. In the quarterfinals, but he had to the Dominican Pedro Nolasco already in the first round by abandoning it and thus won no medal .

In 1985 he won the World Cup with premature victories over Bernard Price , Ljubiša Simić and Jose Rodriguez .

The following year he was able to celebrate his greatest success as an amateur when he won the gold medal in the US city of Reno at the 4th World Boxing Championships with victories over Fabrizio Cappai , Johnny Vasquez , Aleksandar Christow , Arnaldo Mesa and René Breitbarth .

Moon also won two gold medals at the Asian Games , one in 1982 in the Indian capital New Delhi and one in Seoul in 1986 .

His match record was 219 wins (164 by knockout) with only 22 defeats. He was considered a tough knockouter in his weight class .

Professional career

Moon decided his professional debut in bantamweight on March 8, 1987 with a knockout victory in round 4 in an 8-round fight against the Philippines Ric Bajelot for themselves. In the following year, already in his 7th fight, he boxed against Khaokor Galaxy for the world championship belt of the WBA association and won by "technical point decision" in round 6.

In November of the same year he defended this title against Edgar Monserrat and in February of the following year against Chiaki Kobayashi each by TKo.In his next fight, on July 9, 1989, Moon lost the title in the rematch to Khaokor Galaxy by unanimous decision.

The following year Moon switched to super flyweight and fought in his first fight against Nana Yaw Konadu for the WBC World Championship. Moon decided this battle by "technical point decision" in round 9 and thus won the title. He defended this belt a total of nine times in a row and lost it on November 13, 1993 against José Luis Bueno by a split judge's decision.

After this defeat, Sung-Kil Moon ended his career.
