Boxing World Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Boxing World Cup is a global boxing competition organized by AIBA and has been held irregularly since 1979. Depending on the number of participants, the tournament consists of a round of sixteen, a round of 16, a quarter-final, a semi-final and a final. The two semi-final losers each receive a bronze medal; There was an exception in 1990, when the two semi-final losers dueled for third place. Another exception in 1990 was that the competitions were held in three countries: Cuba , Ireland and India .

From 1979 to 1998 the boxers competed against each other exclusively in individual competitions. In 2002 and 2005 and 2006 the championships were held as team competitions. In 2002, Cuba and the hosts Kazakhstan met in the final : Cuba won just 7: 5. In 2005 Cuba was again in the final, this time the opponent was Russia : Russia won 7: 4 in their own country. In 2006, Cuba reached the final for the third time in a row and took revenge in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku , beating Russia 12:10. In 2004, women's competitions (in individual competitions) took place for the first time and so far only.

Due to the election of the new AIBA President Wu Ching-Kuo in 2006, the 2007 team competitions were canceled. The last competitions so far were held in 2008 in individual competitions in Moscow . When the next competitions will take place is sometimes unknown.

The Cuban heavyweight star Félix Savón is the most successful participant to date with four gold medals and Cuba is by far the most successful participating nation with 56 gold, 20 silver and 2 bronze medals.
