Sergei Wladimirowitsch Wodopjanow ( Russian Сергей Владимирович Водопьянов ; born September 20, 1987 in Taldyqorghan , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian boxer . He was world champion in 2007 in Chicago in the bantamweight silver medalist at the 2009 World Championships in Milan in the featherweight and participants in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and 2012 in London .

Career

Sergei Wodopjanow won the silver medal in the light flyweight division in 2004 at the Junior World Championships in South Korea and in 2005 the gold medal in the same weight class at the Junior European Championships in Estonia . He defeated among others Nordine Oubaali and Howhannes Danieljan twice . At the Junior World Championships in Morocco in 2006 , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Vasyl Lomatschenko .

In 2006, after a final defeat against Georgi Balakschin, he became Russian runner-up in flyweight and won the Russian championship in bantamweight the following year with a final victory against Shinat Shandibayev. He then started at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago and won the bantamweight gold medal by winning against Luke Boyd, Manju Wanniarachchi, Gary Russell , McJoe Arroyo and Enchbatyn Badar-Uugan .

Through this success he was qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where he was again able to defeat McJoe Arroyo in the preliminary round, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Akhil Kumar. At the World Cup in Moscow in 2008 he won a bronze medal in the bantamweight division after losing in the semifinals to Veaceslav Gojan .

In 2009 he became Russian featherweight champion and also won the silver medal in this weight class at the 2009 World Championships in Milan . With wins against Amangeldy Hudaybergenov, Erzhan Musafirov, Kevin Rivers, Yasniel Toledo and Bohodirion Sultanov, he had reached the final, where he was again defeated by Vasyl Lomatschenko. In 2010 he was defeated in the semi-finals of the Russian championship against Dmitri Polyansky and won bronze in the bantamweight division, and he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2010 European championships in Moscow against Denis Makarov .

In 2011 he defeated Eduard Absalimow and Dmitri Polyansky at the national championships, among others, and became Russian bantamweight champion, but was defeated in the fight for the medal ranks of the 2011 World Championships in Baku against Anvar Junusov . In the preliminary rounds he prevailed against Deivi Julio and Zhang Jiawei . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he beat Alberto Melián , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Robenilson de Jesus .

In 2013 he was again Russian bantamweight champion with a final victory against Eduard Absalimow, won the Summer Universiade in Kazan and the World Combat Games in Saint Petersburg . At the Russian championship in 2014 he lost to Absalimow in the quarterfinals and in 2015 won the silver medal in the welterweight division at the World Police and Fire Games in Fairfax .
