Shiva Thapa (born December 8, 1993 in Guwahati ) is an Indian bantamweight amateur boxer . He is one of the most successful Asian boxers and was an Olympian in 2012 and 2016.

Career

Shiva Thapa is the youngest of six siblings and started boxing at the age of seven. He became Indian Junior Champion in 2008 and 2009, won the gold medal at the Haider Aliyev International Boxing Cup 2008 in Azerbaijan, a bronze medal at the Children of Asia Games in Russia in 2008 and a bronze medal at the 2009 World Junior Championships in Armenia.

At the 2010 World Youth Championships in Azerbaijan, he won the silver medal. With victories against the starters from England, Sweden, Russia and Romania, he moved into the final, where he was defeated by the eventual Olympic champion Robeisy Ramírez . He then took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and won the silver medal again after being eliminated in the final against Robeisy Ramírez.

In 2011 he won the Indian championships in the elite class (adults) and was also able to win the gold medal at the Beogradski Pobednik Tournament in Serbia. He defeated the Scots Joe Ham, the Hungarian Krisztian Nagy and in the final the world champion and number 2 in the world rankings, Detelin Dalakliew from Bulgaria.

At the Czech Ústí nad Labem tournament, he was only defeated in the final against Vittorio Parrinello and thus won silver. For this he won the Asian Olympic qualification in 2012 in Kazakhstan. He beat Mohamed Nooristani from Afghanistan, Worapoj Petchkoom from Thailand, Satoshi Shimizu from Japan and Wessam Salamana from Syria. He thus qualified as the youngest Indian boxer to date for the Olympic Games, but retired from the 2012 Summer Games in London in the preliminary round against the Mexican Óscar Valdez .

In 2013 he won the Asian Championships in Jordan, defeating Qairat Jeralijew , military world champion in 2014. At the 2013 World Championships in Kazakhstan, he reached the quarter-finals after a bye and victories against Mario Fernandez from the Philippines and Alberto Melián from Argentina, where he lost to the later World champion Cavid Çələbiyev from Azerbaijan and was eliminated in 5th place. After losing in the round of 16 at the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Michael Conlan from Ireland, bronze medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games, he finished 5th at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea.

In May 2015 he won an international tournament in Doha . At the Asian Championships in Thailand in 2015, he won a bronze medal. He won another bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Doha. He beat the Algerian Khalil Litim in the preliminary round, the Moroccan Mohamed Hamout in the round of 16 and Hakan Erseker from Qatar in the quarter-finals. In the semi-final fight he was narrowly defeated by the Uzbek Murodjon Ahmadaliyev .

In February 2016 he won the South Asian Games in Shillong . He then took part in the Asian Olympic qualification in China and reached second place after only being eliminated in the final against Chatchai Butdee . Before that he had defeated the starters from South Korea and Japan, as well as the Kazakhs Qairat Yeraliyev . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he was eliminated by Robeisy Ramírez .

At the 2017 Asian Championships in Tashkent , he won the silver medal after being eliminated in the final against Elnur Abduraimov . In the semifinals he had defeated Dordschnjambuugiin Otgondalai . He then started at the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , where he got out of the round of 16 without a fight.

He won bronze at the 2019 Asian Championships in Bangkok.
