Shillong or Shilong is the capital of the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya . It is the administrative seat of the administrative district of East Khasi Hills and is home to North Eastern Hill University , founded in 1973 , a seismological observatory and the pharmaceutical industry.
Here is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong , which has been led by the Salesians of Don Bosco since its foundation in 1934 ; the current bishop has been the Indian clergyman Dominic Jala since 1999 . Part of the Don Bosco Center for Indigenous Cultures (DBCIC: Don Bosco Center for Indigenous Cultures ) is the Don Bosco Museum in the Mawlai district, it is considered the largest museum in India in terms of area. The DBCIC includes research, publications, training and animation programs relating to the cultures of northeast India and the surrounding area.
Until the Indian state of Meghalaya was detached from the great Assam in 1972, Shillong was the capital of Assam, expanded by the British East India Company from 1874 as a hill station and then a residential city.
During the monsoons between March and November, Shillong is particularly humid and poor in light; it is located in the area with the world's largest amounts of precipitation (compare the nearby world record location Cherrapunji ).
