Ryan Burnett (born May 21, 1992 in Belfast ) is a British professional boxer and former IBF and WBA world bantamweight champion .

Amateur career

Ryan Burnett won 94 of 98 fights for Ireland, won the silver medal at the Youth World Championships in Baku in May 2010 and the gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August 2010 . He defeated in the two tournaments, among others Salman Əlizadə , Manuel Cappai , Mark Barriga and Yosvany Veitía .

Professional career

In 2013 he turned pro at Hatton Promotions by Ricky Hatton and won his debut on May 24th by knockout in the first round against Laszlo Nemesapati from Hungary. After three more fights, he was signed by Frank Warren . In October 2015 he became European Champion of the WBO and a month later also British Champion.

On June 10, 2017, he defeated Lee Haskins in the fight for the IBF world title on points and also had him twice on the ground. On October 21, 2017, he also won the WBA world title with a unanimous victory over Shanat Schaqijanow .

In February 2018, Burnett resigned the IBF title and focused on defending his WBA title on March 31, 2018, which he won by unanimous decision against Yonfrez Parejo. In his second title defense on November 3, 2018 in Glasgow , he lost to Nonito Donaire .
