Manuel Fabrizio Cappai (born October 9, 1992 in Cagliari ) is an Italian light flyweight amateur boxer and Olympic participant from 2012 and 2016.

Boxing career

Cappai was Italian Youth Champion in 2009 and Italian Champion in 2011, 2012 and 2013. At the 2010 World Youth Championships in Baku , he beat Rosan Elegedara from Sri Lanka (10: 1), but was eliminated in the second preliminary round against Irish Ryan Burnett (1: 3). In 2011 he won the gold medal at the Vlaznia tournament in Shkodra with a final victory against Denny Hitarihun from Indonesia (6: 3).

In March 2012 he took part in the Chemistry Cup in Halle , defeating Santos Vasquez from the USA (20: 9) and Carlos Quipo from Ecuador (12:11), before he was third in the semifinals against Belik Galanow from Russia (9:12) Place eliminated. In April he took part in the European Olympic qualification in Trabzon , where he again reached third place. After victories against Koryun Soghomonyan from Armenia (13:10) and Łukasz Maszczyk from Poland (19: 8), he lost in the semifinals to Alexandar Alexandrow from Bulgaria (5: 9). He was then qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , but lost there in the preliminary round against Mark Barriga of the Philippines (7:17).

In April 2013 he won the gold medal at the Gee Bee tournament in Helsinki against Ibrahim Mohammed from Finland (17: 4) and Marcus Gévia (11: 9) from France . In June he started at the 2013 European Championships in Minsk , defeating Tinko Banabakow from Bulgaria (3-0), but retired in the quarter-finals against David Hajrapetjan from Russia (1-2) in fifth place. In June he won a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin after he was eliminated in the semifinals against Mohamed Flissi from Algeria (0-3). However, he had defeated this in 2011 in two international matches.

In October he started at the 2013 World Championships in Almaty . There he was able to fight his way into the quarterfinals against Turat Osmonow from Kyrgyzstan (3-0), Tosho Kashiwazaki from Japan (3-0) and Chung-Hyok Ri from North Korea (2-1), where he narrowly beat Yosvany Veitía from Cuba (1 : 2) retired in 5th place.

In August 2014, after a narrow semi-final defeat against Georgi Andonow from Bulgaria (1: 2), he won a bronze medal at the EU championships in Sofia . In April 2016, he was able to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games at the European eliminations in Samsun . He also managed a victory (3-0) against Dmytro Samotajew . At the games themselves, he was eliminated in the first fight against the American Nico Hernández .

At the European Championships 2017 he was eliminated in the quarter-finals and thus qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , where he was also eliminated in the quarter-finals against Belik Galanow . In the last sixteen he had beaten Dmytro Samotajew .

He won a bronze medal at the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Spain and the 2019 European Games in Belarus.
